You can't help but smile...

First of all you need to know that Canadians as a whole are very outgoing and friendly people. I can rarely stand in line (or line-up as they say here) at the grocery store without someone talking to me. I was already aware of this, but it has been proven to me time and time again over the last 72 hours. Between my client's at work, grocery shopping, Best Buy, pumping gas, renting videos, the post office and the farmers market I have interacted with a lot of people in 72 hours. I have come to the conclusioin that it is near impossible to pass a Canadian without them striking up a conversation or commenting on the weather.

The topics of choice by those who have stopped me in the last 72 hours:
- diapers (I don't have kids)
- the olympics (of course)
- the fact that Canada FINALLY won a medal
- the weather (90% throw that one in there somewhere)
- asking me random questions about the US (yes, I still have a Washington license plate, Washington drivers license for ID purposes, and an "American accent" apparently)
- asking me how long I waited the last time I was at the hospital - it's a BIG topic here (I haven't been to a hospital in Canada yet)
- asking if I know Michael Phelps (yes, asking me if I PERSONALLY know Michael Phelps, like every American knows every other American. I don't ask them if they know Wayne Gretsky or Mike Myers)
- anything about Barack Obama
- the weather (big shocker)
- asking why my WAMU "credit card" says DEBIT on it (see March 21st post)
- asking me if I voted for Bush 4 years ago and who I will be voting for this year (but don't ever ask a Canadian what party they belong to or who they voted for because THAT is too personal a question)
- and lastly you guessed it - the weather

Man I love living here.....

  2. Ha! Love it. I just laughed out loud. Let's make a goal to actually TALK this week...no no, not to each other's voicemail, or even text message inbox...actually TALK! :)

  3. Hysterical...I am glad you are surrounded by "friends"! And I think you should just go ahead and tell people that Michael Phelps was your neighbor...because he was, sort of...you lived in the same country! :)

  7. That is awesome!! I wish Americans were a little more that way...I think a lot of people here try and dodge having to strike up any conversation just out of sheer awkwardness or inconvenience.
